Converting Instructor-Led Training to an Impactful Virtual Learning Experience

CARA helped a global consumer packaged goods company upskill a distributed, remote team.

Challenge

Our client, a global consumer packaged goods company, needed to provide consistent Organizational Development services to their employees. To do so, their OD team needed to be trained on a shared framework, and apply that framework on the job, no matter where in the world they work. Their goals included:

  • Allow employees to take training remotely, where and when they needed it
  • Expand the content by leveraging an expert in the field
  • Turn one week of instructor-led training into an engaging on-demand learning experience

Result

CARA delivered on all client expectations! As a result of the success of this project, CARA is currently working on multiple additional virtual learning projects with this client.

Solution

CARA’s Instructional Design experts designed and delivered a blended Virtual Learning program that learners could access on-demand.

  • Leveraging the client’s existing learning platform, CARA created 6, self-guided learning modules that contained short readings, videos, eLearning courses, and assignments.
  • CARA used the client’s existing learning platform to track progress of the learners through the modules.
  • The design included partnering participants for social learning and reinforcement.

Each module culminated in a webinar to discuss assignments, collaborate, and receive feedback.

The Story

CARA’s client is a global consumer packaged goods company, with a global Organizational Development (OD) team serving team members in over 50 countries. Individuals on the OD team came from diverse backgrounds and had varying degrees of education in OD, yet they all had a common goal: to provide outstanding service to their internal clients. They were a global, virtual work team operating out of their home-based offices.

The team leader recognized a need for the team to be trained on a common Organizational Development framework so that they could provide consistent services to the people they served across the organization. Unfortunately, the existing training was five-day lecture-based instructor-led training course. Given that the learners were remote and globally-dispersed, the logistics of attending and delivering this class were challenging – learning was not available right when the employees needed it. Also, there was so much content to deliver in the five days, the employees didn’t have a chance to discuss or apply the concepts on the job with feedback from peers or their manager. Therefore, it wasn’t successful in achieving the goal of increasing consistency of service.

The client turned to the virtual learning experts at CARA for a solution. First, we worked to understand the needs of the client, the audience for training, the learning platform and tools they were using, and the level of expertise they were expected to have at the end of the experience. We determined the existing content that could be leveraged and worked with their subject-matter experts to develop additional content needed for the framework. We then completely redesigned the experience, spreading out the existing five days of lecture, so that learners had the opportunity to absorb each concept and apply it on the job before moving on to the next topic.

  • Each module was built out in the Learning Platform for ease of navigation.
  • eLearning was created for pre-class foundational training.
  • On-demand course content included “bite-sized” information for learners to access in the flow of work, including microlearning videos and readings.
  • Assignments for application on the job and discussions with managers were provided, as well as leader guides so managers could support their employees through the program.
  • Each module culminated in a live, interactive webinar for discussion and feedback.
  • Learner’s progress was tracked through the module to ensure successful completion.

As a result, the CARA team transformed the client’s approach to virtual learning. With each module completed, they gained alignment and deepened their expertise in Organizational Development and how to applies in their role. In fact, they have engaged CARA to convert several additional instructor-led training courses to virtual learning experiences.
